Hey there again!! I have something exciting and fresh to share with you today. I visit an orphanage most Sundays near my home called ‘Santhwanam. On one such recent visit, a few weeks back, I realized that the kids were not spending their vacations constructively.
I thought of making them do some activities which would be interesting and make them learn something new too. The following Sunday I went all geared with colors and crayons. Made them draw whatever they wanted and then made them do a few minutes of meditation. I admit the first attempt was kinda hard!! And being kids they are not easy to manage, and it was difficult to get them excited as well.
But last Sunday I made them color a picture I carried with me. Gave them tips on how to use colors and they were excited and loved the whole idea! I ended the session with a moral story narrated by my friend Ben. And now am planning on some art and craft session the coming week.
If this is going well I want to start it at other places to. I would require some volunteers and great ideas to!!
Am jus praying and hoping that this is going to go well and I can start this at other orphanages too.
Post your comments and ideas, please! Lets make a small difference in the lives of these less fotunates.

Dear Ms.Idicula, it is quite heartening to know that despite your hectic schedules, you are actively taking steps to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged children of our society. I am sure you will not find it hard to enlist support for the same from like-minded people. The youth of today, as we all know, is extensively aware of their surroundings and is extremely committed to the social cause. With someone as capable as you to lead them, am sure finding volunteers for your initiatives will not be a problem. Painting is indeed a great outlet for the creativity in children. It is commendable that you started off with the same. As a next step, asking them to script their own stories (irrespective of however short the stories are), not setting any strict guidelines for the same so as to help them let their imagination fly, and at the end asking them to narrate their story to a group might prove engaging. Not only will it help instill self confidence, the fear of facing a crowd could also be done away gradually through this excercise. As I am not aware of the general age group of the kids in the orphanage, I am at a loss to give more specific suggestions. But if the kids are a little older (like above 12), you could even engage them in casual talk regarding what they wish to do in the future and also give them constructive knowledge and feedback on specialised vocational areas. Hope my humble suggestions find some use in your capable arms. Wish you all success. God bless!!!
Dear Ro,
From my experience with you at the orphanage, I have understood one thing. The kids there waited eagerly for the 3 hours of movie time that they got once every weekend, and we went and spoiled it for them mercilessly. Sorry to discourage your sincere intentions, but you were flawed with the timings. I hated the guests who would barge into the home on sunday afternoons when I was a child. Best wishes for your future endeavors.
